Key client benefits

• We designed and negotiated a simplified connection arrangement which saved the client in excess of £500k compared to their original arrangement.
• We diverted a private overhead line that was originally routed through the site and managed all outages to ensure that the businesses being fed did not lose supply.
• A shared electricity and gas trench for the off-site connections was coordinated to minimise costs and reduce the amount of disruption to the local community.

Providing reserve power to the National Grid through the Capacity Market, the site will help to ensure that reliable energy capacity is available at times of extreme network stress.

The new gas-fired power generation site will provide 40MW of back-up generation to the energy distribution network, reducing the danger of blackouts for homes and businesses when the National Grid is under strain, for instance when renewable generation suddenly drops off and large centralised generators can’t respond fast enough to meet the demand. Adjacent to an existing 20MW diesel generation site which has been in use for the past 5 years, the new site will be ready to operate by the end of 2017. Green Frog Connect are acting as the principal contractor as well as the Independent Connection Provider.

Tom Drake, Director of Green Frog Connect, said: “This is an exciting moment for us as we demonstrate our progression towards reducing carbon emissions and look to the future in terms of working towards flexible, zero carbon power provision. Lowering carbon emissions is a priority for us, and co-locating the two sites ensures we can provide power at times when renewable generation is low, or when demand is high.”

The 27 generators required by the site will be installed, commissioned and maintained by Green Frog Genovate and the gas connection will be undertaken by Green Frog Gas Utilities. Once operational, the site will be controlled by Green Frog Trading to meet the requirements of the Capacity Market and to operate on the open market.

• Re-design of client private network to remove the need for a central power transformer which reduced costs and increased the resiliency of the site.
• In 2017, a second phase to the project was completed which added an extra 20MW of gas generation. Spare ducts installed for the electricity connection during phase one were utilised during this phase helping reduce costs and disruptive roadworks to the local area.

Completed in February 2013, this 20MW diesel power station gives provision for additional active power from generation and/or demand reduction. Our services comprised:

• Design, Project Management and Construction for the new contestable works
• Installation of 33kV metering substation
• Associated jointing, excavation and cable pulling works
• Project Management of non-contestable works

Green Frog Trading now dispatch the plant to ensure Capacity Market events are met, and also operates on the open market providing power at times when renewable generation is low, and/or when demand is high.

Project details

The grid connection was via two connection points on the WPD 11kV network, with the cable terminating in a new substation at The Drove Power Station. A constraining device, with radio communications apparatus was installed and provide a volt free contact to a trip G59/2 relay. Our services included:

• EPC contractor for the design and construction of the power plant.
• Design, Project Management and Construction for the new contestable works.
• Installation of 11kV metering substation.
• Associated jointing, excavation and cable pulling works.
• Project Management of non-contestable works.

This project included the first active management constraint scheme connected to the WPD network at 11kV, to maintain network security and to prevent thermal limits, voltage limits or power quality limits from being exceeded. Green Frog Trading now dispatch the plant to ensure Capacity Market events are met, and also operates on the open market providing power at times when renewable generation is low, and/or when demand is high.
